This is a bit back-handed because the festival has finished.

I had forgotten all about it but it was this last week end. Gill reminded me and we went to our Herbwife Friend's festival at her Sanctuary near Shipston on Stour where we had a super day.

The festival was held over three days but we just went on Saturday.

We arrived at about 10.30am and left at about 10.30pm.

We had a talk on preparing your own herbal preparations, from a lovely (and surprisingly young) girl called Lucinda Walker followed by a forraging food-gathering walk in the fields finding Clover, sorrell, plantain, Hawthorn and dandelion as well as discussing the use of dandelion root (for coffee) and nettle seeds as a condiment and Himalayan Balsam (aka Jumping Jack) seeds as a food enhancer and how to prepare acorns for coffee substitute and flour substiute. we learnt a lot.

We all made Rowan Crosses as amulets (but as there were no rowan berries on the tree we had to use Hawthorn berries which weren't so good and very fiddly.

We had a talk frorm a Medical Herbalist who came from Lincoln to be there which was extremely educational.

Over lunch we had an excellent classical concert from a young soprano from Sussex. She had all her music recorded on her I-pod which was played through the PA sytem.

We made tinctures and potions in the afternoon mainly for protection from and treatment for colds. There is a lovely elder flower and Brandy cold treatment with honey, cloves and rose hipps and a chest-buster of Garlic, horseradish root, Ginger root, turmeric, chilli powder, Paprika powder and apple cide vinegar both of which are infusing as I type.

There were demonstrations in the field from a semi-professional kite flying team all day although the wind was just a bit too strong for them.

Then there was a vegetarian dinner served in the tent (small marquee) followed by everyone doing their party pieces on the small dais.

We left before the evening had finished because most people were camping in the field and we had to get home. We had to fight our way home because the road was blocked in Moreton in Marsh due to road works and we just had to find a way round it across country. (A lot of fun in the dark  )

Sounds super, Paul.

The rowan trees down here have masses of berries on them this year.

Gill took our friend, who lost her husband in May, to a retreat day in the depths of Staffordshire. They both had a good relaxing day.

Gill brought me a head of Rowan berries and so I have been able to re-make our Rowan Crosses with the correct berries and they look so much better (or as Linda would say 'Mo better' :D ).

Fourth try!!!
Grrr....fiery flaming jaguar paw woman!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imSFwqq4cO0

Now, I went looking for Stan Roger's Rowan Shield-which has run amok and gone astray-taken over by mediocre musicians whose efforts hurts my soul & ears...then with gratitude I fell upon this passionate piece. I tried to embed it feverishly, and it didn't work-so Divine Order rules as usual. This song is not about alcohol or whiskey...it's about giants. Be one of them. The world needs ya, and yes-Linda is feeling mo'betta. I'd rather by linnyx, but that's not working so well for me...and don't you know???? It's all about ME!!! Laffing so hard............

Lyrics:
Cold wind on the harbour and rain on the road
Wet promise of winter brings recourse to coal
There's fire in the blood and a fog on Bras d'Or
The giant will rise with the moon.

'Twas the same ancient fever in the Isles of the Blest
That our fathers brought with them when they "went West"
It's the blood of the Druids that never will rest
The giant will rise with the moon.

So crash the glass down! move with the tide!
Young friends and old whiskey are burning inside.
Crash the glass down! Fingal will rise
With the moon.

In inclement weather the people are fey
Three thousand year stories as the night slips away
Remembering Fingal feels not far away
The giant will rise with the moon.

The wind's in the north, there be new moon tonight
And we have no circle to dance in it's sight
So light a torch, bring bring the bottle and build the fire bright
The giant will rise with the moon.

Just found the link to the original song I was looking for. Music soothes the heart and having a Rowan Shield doesn't hurt either. Yer all kind folk-not a single sweet gentle thot is wasted. Love you.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqGv2l5b ... re=related

Lyrics:
Pale was the wounded knight, that bore the rowan shield,
Loud and cruel were the ravens' cries that feasted on the field,
Saying "Backwater cold and clear will never clean your wound,
There's none but the Witch of the Westmereland can make thee hale and
sound."

So turn, turn your stallion's head 'til his red mane flies in the wind,
And the Rider of the Moon goes by and the Bright Star falls behind,
And clear was the paling moon when his shadow passed him by
Below the hill were the brightest stars when he heard the owl let cry,

Saying "Why do you ride this way, and wherefore came you here?"
"I seek the Witch of the Westmereland that dwells by the winding mere."
And it's weary by the Ullswater and the misty Breakford way,
'Til through the cleft in the Cruxton Pass the winding water lay.

He said "Lie down me brindled hound, and rest ye me good grey hawk,
And thee, my steed, may graze thy fill, for I must dismount and walk.
But come when you hear my horn, and answer swift the call!
For I fear ere the sun will rise this morn ye will serve me best of all."

And it's down to the water's brim he's borne the rowan shield,
And the golden rod he has cast in to see what the lake might yield.
And wet rose she from the lake, and fast and fleet went she.
One half the form of a maiden fair with a jet black mare's body.

And loud, long and shrill he blew, 'til his steed was by his side,
High overhead the grey hawk flew, and swiftly he did ride,
Saying "Course well, me brindled hound, and fetch me the jet black mare!
Stoop and strike, me good grey hawk, and bring me the maiden fair!"

She said "Pray sheathe thy silvery sword. Lay down thy rowan shield,
For I see by the briny blood that flows you've been wounded in the field."
And she stood in a gown of the velvet blue, bound 'round with a silver
chain.
And she's kissed his pale lips once and twice, and three times 'round
again.

And she's bound his wounds with the goldenrod, full fast in her arms he
lay,
And he has risen hale and sound with the sun high in the day.
She said "Ride with your brindled hounds at heel, and your good grey hawk
in hand,
There's none can harm the knight who's lain with the Witch of the
Westmereland."
