I've booked a coach trip to the Ardingly Antiques Fair on Wednesday 30th October - really looking forward to it, haven't been to one of these for yonks! It's tough sometimes not having a car. I'll be on the lookout for bargains everywhere....quirky stuff! http://www.iacf.co.uk/ardingly |

Yes, you've been too long without an eccentric object find. |

Exhausting day at the fair! And practically nowhere to sit down!! At least the weather was OK. I bought...wait for it... a pokey stick that was described as a swagger stick...priced at £12 but I laughed him down to a fiver! I won't post a pic cos you'll think I'm crazy! Also a ...umm... cow horn made into a little 'trumpet' that actually works. And lastly a very old little photo album (dropping to bits) of an unknown person, documenting a life from the start of the 20thC up to about the 1950s; I browsed through it, and was so moved that I bought it for a fiver. One of the few photos that has anything written on it, says on the back 'Kathleen's Confirmation' - I thought it was a wedding photo at first. Fantastic social documentation - I'd love to know who it belonged to! Oh - for a quid, I bought a little pewter dish with an odd Nordic-style image impressed onto it, of a sorta Norseman with a Viking helmet on a boat, holding out something in his hands....just took my fancy, as they do. Then we went to the town of Lewes (didn't know this was going to happen) where I had a lovely bowl of cauliflour & cheese soup in the Casbah Cafe before heading back to the coach - not nearly enough time there, I wanted to go see the castle, but couldn't. Not a bad day in all though - but I was away from home for 10 & 1/2 hours & Stan was very cross with me when I got back! |

It has probably done you the world of good having a day out - even if it was a bit hectic. |

I dream of being able to have a day like that. Let's dream it together, that someday...we can have a living adventure. Wouldn't that be so fun??? I enjoyed the story of your day!!! xoxox |

Here's a pic of the pewter dish.. I now see it's a bowl of something that he's holding in his hands! I couldn't make that out with the naked eye! Amazing detail for such a small dish - it's only 9cm in diameter. |

The image link isn't working. Is a pokey stick a title, or a description? |

How weird was that!? I could see it when I posted it! Can you see it now, Torre? The pokey stick? Well...it's about 2' long, made of bamboo I think, with a knob at the end! It's very smooth & tactile & obviously well used (though god knows what for!) I'm just a sucker for wood and, if it's quirky as well - it's right up my street! |

I can see it now. What was there before was "image". Maybe it was a walking stick for the fellow on the dish. |

can we have a pic of the pokey stick please. the photo album sounds lovely, but what a shame it is not with its own family. |

I love that bowl, I would like to find out more about that. I am watching a Time Team on the isle of Man and the vikings had a lot to do there, with some coming from Scotland. I do find ancient history interesting more so than the last 400 years, maybe that little bowl has some history, it may even be Nordic. I would have bought it too, I find little things like that fascinating, the bowl could be actually depicted in the image as an offering bowl to the gods. What do you think? Arfa |
