Michael, like you I prefer local & rustic kind of places.
Whilst I prefer the traditional look of the hotel you worked in, the design for new Corbyn Head / Phyllis Court looks very much like what they built in place of the old Palm Court Hotel on seafront ….which suspiciously burnt down after being empty for a while and then voila! the new planning application was accepted! (hmmm can we trust Torbay council?)
I can't upload pics here, hope these links work.

Palm Court looked the same as this for many years :

then it burnt down.... https://goo.gl/images/tEHTnc

now it looks like this, https://goo.gl/images/LChuuB

and to be honest those cafes underneath always have people sitting outside even in the winter! it has rejuvenated a prime seafront area.

There's a lot of new development being planned for Torquay, some is ok, some I am not keen on at all!

I liked it the way it was Lynn. Maybe it's just nostalgia working! :-)

People are very divided in Torquay. Some love the new designs, some are campaigning against the new developments. One group is taking Torbay council to court over the proposed hotel on the harbourside which will be 11 storeys tall, incorporate the Pavilion as the reception area, and Cary Green as a car park.

I don't like the Torwood Street plans (by the clocktower), but those lovely shops & buildings have been boarded up for about 10 years, so at least something is happening at last.

Michael, what would Commander Bond say about this?!? The Corbyn Head Hotel / Phyllis Court is soon to be demolished. I'm not in Torquay at the moment (in Turkey) but I saw it on facebook - maybe you can access it Michael ? …. the group is called Torbay Undiscovered, Lost, Forgotten, Unloved!
