What is so special about Ulverston I hear you cry? Well, several things I reply. Firstly, this .......... Yup! Laurel & Hardy. It is the birthplace of Stan Laurel. Also it has a lovely Carnival the 'Carnival Master' at the head of the procession (following a Police van) Then the first band then the Mountain Rescue the Coastguard Rambo Dance troupe the drumming band a pipe band the Carnival Queen on a flat bed pony cart (it had to stop until all of the proceeding events had reached the top of the hill and then take a run at it - apparently it failed to get up the hill in one go last year when it stopped half way up ) a dray from the local brewery then the Dragon (it has the replica of a lighthouse on its nose which is a memorial on the hill overlooking the town and is its emblem) the dragon was lead by a penny whistler and a drummer I know it was a dragon 'cos it was dragon its tail on the road. the procession went up the hill and then came back into the centre of the town by another road and I managed to get all of the entrants again. NO I AM NOT GOING TO POST ALL OF THEM AGAIN. The only photo of this second lot that I amgoing to add here is the Fire Engine with a 'clown' driving it with a dog as co-pilot. That's Ulverston as we saw it. |
