Here are a few shots of the waterfront of Lisbon and one of the Jacaranda trees in the city centre.

Lisbon

I will post links to other groups of photos as I edit everything down to reasonable chunks.

Those Jacaranda trees are spectacular Paul!! I've never seen anything like them. Lovely photos, par for your course. Never have been to Portugal & they sure didn't teach us much about their history in public schools. I would love some narrative, if you have a mind to share.
:D

Thanks, Helen.

For Linny - from memory and without Googling - the Portuguese King Henry was extremely interested in astronomy and things navigational. He built an observatory at Sagres, near Cape St Vincent, where seamen were trained in the art of navigation. This was at the time of the discovery of the World by the seafaring nations of the Iberian penninsula when Spain was about to invade the New World of South America. King Henry agreed with the King of Spain that the World would be split between Spain and Portugal along a particular line of Longitude (I can't remember which). Spain was to have dominion over all of the discoveries to the West of this line and Portugal over all those to the East.

There was an error in this in that the 'bulge' of Brazil was to the East of this line and it was claimed by Portugal which is why, of all the countries of South America, only Brazil speaks Portuguese while all the rest speak Spanish.

Portugal also established colonies in Madeira, the West coust of Africa and the Malaysian peninsula and Indonesia, etc.

That's how I remember it.

PS found more Here

Click on the small World map to see all of the extent of the old Poruguese influence.

Considering the size of the country and it's population ,Portuguese were exceptional explorers of the era.
I was furious (with myself) when I missed the one day of the year when the Roman catacombs of Lisbon were open to the public!

I had the same thought Ciderman!!! And then I had the same thought, Paul.
Crumbs ( ), I remember learning about De Gama...but I had no IDEA how vast the Portguese maritime body of knowledge & expertise was!! Now, I've got to look up about the flat world. Isn't it interesting how Imperialism/Colonialism was the hallmark of a leading edge country?

Thanks for light a fire in my belly with your trip and narrative Paul. Sometimes, if I start with wiki...I end up following links all over the place and get confused. I love it when people will tell me their stories!! Thank you so much. :D :D
