Linny, I have one of those pillows and love it, but it's too big to take travelling.

Here's an amazing satellite photo of the Canary & Madeira Islands, taken in October, just after the earthquake off the island of Hierro (lower left hand corner...Madeira at top left). Morocco & the desert on the right.
So now you know where Paul is! :D

Safely back home.

Couldn't do much as we both developed very bad colds. :( :( Seems as though we caught these at our neighbour's house-warming party on 5th November - there were oodles of children there of all ages.

Spent most of the week from Wednesday coughing and trying to keep up with our noses. We did however manage one very easy Levada walk on Sunday - in the rain  - photo of rainbow will follow once I can find the energy to download it.

Lots of high winds and rain but quite pleasantly warm in between.

Off to cough some more. :(

High winds, rain and bad colds & coughs? Sounds like you had a wonderful time!!
I was actually surprised when you said you were going to Madeira in November! It is right out in the Atlantic, after all!
Good to have you back anyway.

We went to Madeira in November the last time we went and it was extremely pleasant.

The weather this time was slightly worse but we were still able to sit outdoors at the cafes and eat. We only needed a light fleece at night.

and then I looked again and this is what caught my attention

yes, a replica of the Santa Maria do Columbo under full sail. it was available for trips but we were not up to that :( .

Looking up into the mountains towards Monte we could see the church at Monte

closer

When we went on our one and only Levada walk - in the rain - here is Gill smelling a Ginger Iris flower - very pretty but a terribly invasive weed.

and, finally here is the rainbow I promised

if you look closely you will see that it is just about a double one. The rock in the background is called Eagle Rock.

Were you on this plane, Paul? :P Apparently Funchal Airport is notoriously difficult to land at, and this Easyjet plane had to go up again & try for a second time!

We flew with Thompson Airways.

Looking at the video it would appear that this was taken before the runway was extended. This would make the video more than 11 years old.

We flew to Madeirs about 13 to 14 years ago when the runway was so short we all had to be weighed and the pilot had to decide whether he could get us off the ground with sufficent fuel to get us to the UK in a single flight or if we would have to land to refuel in Portugal.

The effects of wind can affect landing at any airport. We came back from (I've forgotten  ) and just as we were about to touch down at Birmingham Airport (BHX) the plane did a sidewaystwist that was so deep that I thought the wings were going to touch the ground and the pilot must have thought so too because he put on full thrust and took us round again for a safer landing.
