My lovely son Alvaro is taking me off on a trip for my 71st birthday this year! :D
We discussed, Norwegian Fjords, Iceland etc - but I'm not having the urge to travel by plane recently!!

So we've settled on the west coast of Scotland - Oban & surrounds, driving there by car. Always wanted to see Oban with its palm trees :o and gulf stream. We'll go to the Isle of Mull while there.

I think it'll be in early August (not settled yet) & we should be staying at one of these cottages which have rave reviews on TripAdvisor.

This is such a super birthday gift & I can't wait! 8)

That looks superb Helen, it will be a very nice birthday gift for you.
I have been to Oban and loved it, if I can give just a wee bit of advice, just incase a good waterproof coat and mozzy protection as you are near water, but we never encountered any mozzies in all our visits to Scotland, although I have heard from others that they can spoil a holiday.

I've never been there but my wife worked at Loch Melfort Hotel , Arduaine -by-Oban, during her 'OE' . She says it's a very beautiful with lovely walks and coastline. Mentioning this has brought back memories to her. She recommends , if you get the chance, to visit Inverewe Gardens, Kyle of Lockelsh, with it's sub-tropical plants , because of the Gulf Stream. She was there in 1976 at the age of 26!

If you have time take a boat trip to Fingel's cave if you have time. An amazing site seeing the waves sweep into the cave. Then there is the puffins nesting there. A great day out.

But he won't! I think a 9 hour car drive would be too much for him (and us!) I just want to chill out.

I was forgetting you were down country, far to long for the dog without a lot of stopping on the way up.

Have a super time.

We have been to Oban twice and enjoyed each visit. There are plenty of places to go. However, a visit to Iona is a must! A beautiful little island and a lovely Abbey.

Unfortunately we did not find the time to go to Staffa (Fingal's Cave) :(

And, if the weather is fine, there is no better place to go.

If you go to Iona, have your camera ready on the ferry over and look out for the dolphins that follow you over.
Nice a look around the abbey.

Well I know we're taking a trip to the Isle of Mull, and you have to be there before you can get to Iona, so I'll see if we have time to go there too. We only have a week, you know, and I want to see so many standing stones & such! And I think Alvaro & Lucy are taking bikes, so that will be a couple of half days that I don't go anywhere! :)

We didn't get to Iona - it took us so long to get to the port where you get the ferry, that there was no time to cross, come back & catch the ferry back to the mainland. This was caused, I might add, by Alvaro & Lucy getting stuck in a bog when we we were trying to find a stone circle...it took over half an hour to get them & their wellies out!!

I will post some pics soon, or maybe just give a link to my Flickr page - saves time!
