For those (I'm thinking of Amancara!) who are interested, Finnair are offering very reasonable flights to Mumbai & Delhi up to November this year - must be booked by 30 June though...£318 return!

Details here.

Regarding cheap airfare....better travel while we still can. I read that the cost of jet fuel has increased 95%. Since there's no sign that oil prices will decrease, small cut-rate airlines will go out of business. Already American Airlines is cutting flights (1300 in one week alone) to save money. Many short-haul commutes will be cancelled. Economically, medium-distance flights with full planes are the most cost effective for airlines. Air travel might again become something only for the well-off.
I have to check the airfares to Costa Rica to see how much they've gone up in the last few months. We're thinking of going there in February.

But crude oil has gone down! From $135 a barrel a couple of weeks ago, it's now at $121, I believe! No sign of that at the petrol pumps though :x

Love the house Amancarra.

True about travel-now costs $1000US to fly from Minneapolis to Omaha (a year ago it was $125)....airlines pulling flights left and right. Maybe having to larn to walk on water.

Crude and sweet oil can drop $$ by the barrell---but the refineries are banking big time. Still-got no reason to whinge...ya'll have paying alot more at the pumps than us spoiled ones for years.

I hope, for the planet's sake, that the price of oil soars and that all airlines are out of business within a decade! :D  :D

But do you realize how a soaring oil price will affect every aspect of your life? Everything you buy will go skyhigh in price. Crops use oil-derived fertilizer, fuel-driven tractors, fuel-guzzling transport systems. Imported fruit, vegetables and fish that come by boat, simply won't, or will cost too much to buy. All food will go up in price and there will be shortages. Heating costs will be through the roof (for some reason natural gas, which is not scarce, is rising along with oil). All manufactured products will increase in price. Public transit still uses energy, so fares will go up. There is nothing that won't be touched by a high oil cost.

Finding substitutes for oil is all well and good but it takes time. Organic gardening is great on a small scale, but doesn't produce comparable yields to convential farming. Sure, there's things we can do that we've been too lazy or complacent to bother with, but I've got no desire to live like a pioneer, or a hunter-gatherer. If the earth suffers some from humans wanting comfort and convenience in their lives, not to mention just having a life at all (eg. the green revolution in farming, higher standards of living, improved medicine) then I would say to the earth, "TOUGH!". It'll still be here long after we're gone and it will recover in no time, so what's the great harm?
