I forgot to say that we were supplied with bits of mistletoe, which grows on birch trees there (we saw it growing)!
But their mistletoe doesn't have berries apparently! I just remembered because I found a shrivelled up piece in a pocket!This is a place near a road, which was described to us first as a 'meeting point for witches' in olden days....then we were told the monument is to commemorate the deaths of Lithuanian resistence fighters who fought a running battle there with the Russians after they took over the country after the war!!
This may seem run-of-the-mill to you, but bear in mind there were quite a few Russians in the group, and memories are long & resentments bitter!!!
I thought it was rather brave to say these things! But I suppose they have to be said now....
It's carved in wood, of course.
I often mused during the time I spent there, how many of the participants tried to see things from a Lithuanian's point of view & not only their own.
