I got a fuzzy shot of a red squirrel when in Scotland two weeks ago.

I'll post it on the 'I'm back' topic.

On Sunday Riitta & I went deep into the forest (and I mean deep!) to look for mushrooms. These are real primeval forests, mainly fir, pine & birch amongst a few others. The moss & lichen in there are incredible...

Those are yer cranberries there :) which in fact are so bitter that the drink we buy must be stuffed with sugar!!

These are the 'funnel' mushrooms we were collecting, so called cos of their shape..

Right in the middle of this part of the forest, we came across a 'refuge hut' - a bit like the ones you see in the Rockies in movies!! It was fantastic! Beds for 4 people, stocked cut wood, water, & food with a fireplace to cook it on! 8) Wonderful - I felt like a pioneer - do I look like one??!! (The caps, by the way, are to keep off 'moose flies' that apparently dig into the scalp & suck the blood!!!) The door is always open & anyone can use it.

you do look very intrepid 8)

i'm sure rita knew which mushrooms were safe to eat-----there was a woman who eat death cap mushrooms on the isle of wight, just recently, and died. and her niece, who ate them too, has damaged her liver. they found them at the botanical gardens in ventnor!

Oh yes, Riitta knows her 'shrooms! That night she made a sauce with them, and we had baked salmon..potatoes..tomatoes, courgettes, beetroot & chard from her garden..and the mushroom sauce.......absolutely divine!! YUM! :icecream:

Now for the piece de resistance....

Image

Sunset over the river at the bottom of Riitta's garden! She has her own jetty & a couple of little boats there! And she also goes there for a quick dip in the water after the sauna!!! (I didn't!)

It has just been pointed out to me (by an American) that the beastie in the sign is a moose...not an elk! I thought they were the same animal, but they're not!

Just going off topic for a second. Have you heard that Sarah Palin has been described as a Post Turtle?

I received this email from my Brother in Michigan:-

While suturing a cut on the hand of a 75-year old Texas rancher whose hand was caught in a gate while working cattle, the doctor struck up a conversation with the old man. Eventually the topic got around to Sarah Palin and her bid to be a heartbeat away from being President.

The old rancher said, ‘Well, ya know, Palin is a post turtle.’

Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a post turtle was.

The old rancher said, ‘When you’re driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that’s a post turtle.’

The old rancher saw a puzzled look on the doctor’s face, so he continued to explain. ‘You know she didn’t get up there by herself, she doesn’t belong up there, she doesn’t know what to do while she is up there, and you just wonder what kind of dumb ass put her up there to begin with.’

Anyway - back on topic - Finland looks very nice.
