Amsterdam is a great city. Entirely served by miles of canals most of which are navigable on the water buses. There are more than two and a half thousand bridges within the city and it is not even on the coast of any sea. We had a trip there recently and the sail home was very rough. I felt very rough too. I missed brekkers, Daisy said she thought I was dead. Not yet old girl.
Anyway if you would like to see a few pictures from the trip I have posted them at

http://aconabike.blogspot.com/2008/11/amsterdam-trip-18-november-2008.html#links

As usual if you want to a see larger version left click the picture.

Thanks for the pics, Drew - lovely! :)

The one entitled 'Mike looking apprehensive with Corus in the background' looks like a woman to me!!

And what is a 'clochemerle'?? :o Is it what I think it is??

If you think it is a place where gents do their thing emptying a full bladder it certainly is. In Amsterdam, in fact in Holland in general they have this thing called 'wildplassen' which literally means wild lakes. It is the extraordinary custom of urinating in public. Something which the Duitch appear to be world leaders. Maybe this link explains better than I.
http://translate.google.co.uk/translate?hl=en&sl=nl&u=http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wildplassen&sa=X&oi=translate&resnum=1&ct=result&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dwildplassen%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26channel%3Ds%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-GB:official%26hs%3D1UT%26sa%3DX%26pwst%3D1
By the way, I have to say that personally I cannot perform in these odd things and under opublic scrutiny. I get stage fright and stand there looking like a right walley. However, I am an Englishman so I suppose that explains it. Last summer Rupert [my son] seemed to spend half his life using them. Although English he is also a Royal Marine which perhaps explains things.

So, there we have it, don't knock it until you have tried it. Now I can hear the question forming, 'What do the ladies do ?' Well I can confirm that they use the fascilities in whatever bar or establishment is at hand. OK.

Thank you for answering my question before it had to asked   . It is rather weird that yer feet are visible-but the pics and travelogue are lovely. Really got a feel for your experience with the pilot.
How big was the ship you were on-I'm guessing somewhat large with the pilot.
thanx

A few years ago it was called Val de Loire and we used to sail from Plymouth [England where the pilgrim fathers sailed to America from in 1607] to Santander [Spain] on it.
So there you have it.
