Thanks, Helen.
For Linny - from memory and without Googling - the Portuguese King Henry was extremely interested in astronomy and things navigational. He built an observatory at Sagres, near Cape St Vincent, where seamen were trained in the art of navigation. This was at the time of the discovery of the World by the seafaring nations of the Iberian penninsula when Spain was about to invade the New World of South America. King Henry agreed with the King of Spain that the World would be split between Spain and Portugal along a particular line of Longitude (I can't remember which). Spain was to have dominion over all of the discoveries to the West of this line and Portugal over all those to the East.
There was an error in this in that the 'bulge' of Brazil was to the East of this line and it was claimed by Portugal which is why, of all the countries of South America, only Brazil speaks Portuguese while all the rest speak Spanish.
Portugal also established colonies in Madeira, the West coust of Africa and the Malaysian peninsula and Indonesia, etc.
That's how I remember it.
