One evening last October, when I was far from sober
And dragging home a load with manly pride
My feet began to stutter and I fell down in the gutter
And a pig came up and parked right by my side

Then I mumbled, "It's fair weather when good comrades get together"
Till a lady passing by was heard to say,
"You can tell a man that boozes by the playmates that he chooses"
Then the pig got up and slowly walked away

I began to scratch the gravel, on my all fours I did travel
I rambled down the road the best I could
When I awoke next morning, just as the day was dawning
I was in a hog pen away out in the woods

Then the hogs began to grumble, I started and I stumbled
I fell right in their midst and there I lay
Then one by one they started, till all the herd departed
Yes, every hog got up and walked away

Now lately I've been thinking that I will quit my drinking
I'm going to leave off whiskey, beer and grog
For there's no consolation, but only aggravation
You can't even find friends with a hog .

I was paid 19/6d for that in 1958. That was a huge amount of money! I used to mow lawns for about 2/6d and when I was old enough and had a drivers license I delivered greengroceries for a pound for monday, Wednesday and Friday took me about an hour after school each day. :)

Yes and it was entered into a competition by a relation in England for some newspaper competition . I was rewarded with the 19/6d and my relation paid for the postage! It was a cheque! Do you remember them? :-) Took about 3 weeks to clear! :)

Bloody hell! Some slight variations but otherwise the same! I've been trying to remember where it went but the great uncle I sent it to is long dead and I haven't a clue where the competition was. I can't even remember whose cheque it was. 1958 seems a bloody long time ago! Uncle Wal(ter) was my grandad's brother and they had a farm near Burnham market in Norfolk, where the cropped but also reared pigs. Uncle Wal was an ex army man of the Royal Garrison Artillery who spent time in India and was responsible for naming my first dog "Chubba" (short for Chubbarara- apparently "Boss" in the Indian dialect.)

Being more than somewhat intrigued by this I googled and lots came up ascribing it sometimes to a name and sometimes to anonymous. And some have lots more verses and they mostly differ in some small way. I'm mystified!
